Meat Market ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website at meatmarketplanner.com and the Meat Market mobile application for iOS (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the Service.
Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 24, 2026
Overview
Information We Collect
Information you provide
- Search queries you enter into the chat interface
- Account information when you sign up for an account, including your email address and a password (passwords are stored as one-way hashes by our authentication provider; we never see your plaintext password)
- If you choose Sign In with Apple, an Apple user identifier and the email address Apple provides. Apple may relay a private, randomized email that forwards to your real address.
- Content you create in the app, including saved venue lists, submitted spots, and venue flags or verification reports
Information collected automatically
- Location data (approximate latitude and longitude), only when you explicitly grant permission. On the website this is your browser geolocation; in the iOS app this is the "When In Use" location permission. We use your location to center the map and rank nearby venues. Location is processed at request time and is not stored on our servers or associated with your account.
- Product analytics events (for example, screen views, search completions, venue selections, sign-in outcomes), collected via PostHog. Event properties are sanitized: we do not send raw search text, email addresses, or passwords. When you are signed in, analytics events are associated with your account identifier so we can debug issues and understand cohort behavior.
- Crash reports and performance diagnostics, collected via GlitchTip (a self-hosted, Sentry-compatible service). Reports include stack traces, device model, OS version, and the app release. Before sending, we strip email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, cookies, and request bodies. When you are signed in, crash reports are tagged with your account identifier so we can correlate issues to affected users.
- Standard server logs (IP address, browser or app user agent, referring URL or deep link) generated by our hosting provider when your device makes requests to our API.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide and improve halal restaurant search results
- To power location-aware features (e.g., nearby venues, meeting point optimization)
- To create and authenticate your account, and to sync your saved lists and other app content across your devices
- To analyze usage patterns and improve the product
- To improve the accuracy of our query routing, using a sampled subset of low-confidence queries (see "Data Retention" below)
- To diagnose crashes and performance regressions, and to fix bugs that affect signed-in users
- For internal research, analytics, and business operations
We may also use anonymized and aggregated data for any lawful purpose, including analytics, research, product development, and partnerships. Anonymized and aggregated data is not personal information and is not subject to the privacy rights described below.
Legal Basis for Processing
Legitimate Interest
We process usage data, analytics, and server logs based on our legitimate interest in operating, improving, and securing the Service.
Consent
We process your location data only when you explicitly grant permission, either through your browser's geolocation prompt or, in the iOS app, through the system Location When In Use prompt. You may revoke this consent at any time through your browser settings or, on iOS, in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Meat Market.
Performance of Service
We process search queries and account credentials as necessary to deliver the search results, account features, and other functionality you request.
Third-Party Services
We use third-party service providers to operate this product. These providers may process data on our behalf in accordance with their own privacy policies and applicable data protection laws.
- Supabase. Database, authentication, and file storage. Stores venue data, your account credentials (email and hashed password), your saved lists, submitted spots, and anonymized usage events.
- Apple (Sign In with Apple). If you choose to sign in with Apple, Apple provides us with an Apple user identifier and, on first sign-in, the email address you authorize (which may be a private relay address).
- PostHog. Product analytics. Receives sanitized event names and properties (no raw search text, no email addresses). When you are signed in, events are associated with your account identifier.
- GlitchTip. Crash and performance diagnostics. Receives stack traces, device model, OS version, and the app release; email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, and request bodies are stripped before sending.
- Google (Gemini and Places). Search queries are sent to Google's Gemini API for classification and response synthesis. Venue seed data is enriched via the Google Places API. Google's data usage policies apply.
- Hosting providers. Standard CDN and serverless function hosting for the website, and EAS (Expo Application Services) for iOS app build and delivery infrastructure.
International Data Transfers
Meat Market is operated in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer. We rely on standard contractual clauses and other lawful transfer mechanisms where required by applicable law.
Cookies and Local Storage
On the website, we use cookies for analytics, and our analytics provider may set its own cookies for anonymized usage tracking. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect some functionality.
In the iOS app, we use the device's on-device storage (AsyncStorage and the iOS keychain) to persist your sign-in session, your saved lists, and local preferences such as your last-known location. This data lives on your device and is cleared when you sign out or uninstall the app.
We do not use any third-party advertising SDKs and we do not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. The app does not request access to your device's advertising identifier.
Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is no uniform standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals. At this time, we do not respond to DNT signals. Our data collection practices are described in this Privacy Policy regardless of your DNT setting.
Data Retention
Most search queries are processed in real time and are not stored. We retain a subset of queries, specifically those our routing system flags as ambiguous or low-confidence, for up to 12 months to improve query classification. Retained queries are stored without any account identifier, including for signed-in users.
Account information (email, hashed password, Apple user identifier) and app content you create (saved lists, submitted spots, verification reports) are retained for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete this information from our active databases within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
Analytics data is retained per PostHog's default retention settings. Crash and performance diagnostics are retained per GlitchTip's default retention settings, typically 90 days.
Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and environment-isolated API keys. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
Data Breach Notification
In the event of a data breach that compromises personal information, we will notify affected users and relevant regulatory authorities in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, including the Texas Identity Theft Enforcement and Protection Act. Notification will be provided as promptly as practicable and without unreasonable delay.
